Our Mission

Sherwood Bookstore is a sanctuary from the digital world. We provide an opportunity for reflection and discovery.

We have carefully curated a safe environment to promote an inclusive community and conversation, where knowledge can be shared. Books have the power to bring people together across great distances and time.

Our Values

  • Community - The bookstore is a gathering place for readers to connect through stories and conversation.

  • Diversity - We intentionally curate books that celebrate the richness of human experience, including works by BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, and other historically underrepresented authors.

  • Curiosity - Every book is an invitation to experience new perspectives, build empathy, and cultivate wonder.

Our Beliefs

  • We believe Black and trans lives matter.

  • We are a safe space for the queer community.

  • Joy is Resistance.

  • We are on stolen land.

  • There is no ethical consumption under capitalism (but please still buy our books).

Accessibility

We encourage everyone to help those in our community. We have several programs in place to help anyone who wants a book to get one.

  • Customers can add a small amount to their purchase, which goes into a community fund. This fund will be used to help others who cannot afford the entire cost of a book. Any unused funds at the end of the year will be donated to a local charity!

  • At the front of our store is a book cart where anyone is free to take a book. If you have any beloved books you’d like to share with the community, leave them on the cart for the next person to enjoy.

  • Thursday mornings, from 10-12, we offer a more sensory friendly shopping experience. Using natural light and no music, we hope to create an environment free where anyone can peacefully browse our collection.

The Owners

We opened this bookstore to create a refuge not only for our community, but for ourselves! We have spent decades designing experiences for other industries, but now it’s time to turn our experience inward, making a space in our community that we can share with everyone.

Our family has been in Sherwood for quite some time, making our children the fifth-generation to live here, though they’re the first to live here full-time. We love Sherwood and hope that we can give back to our community through our store.
